Why do you need goal management?

Goal management makes it easier for you to work with your personal mission statement when you identify your various life roles and the goals associated with them. These goals serve as the basis for effective time management and success in your daily life.

To set short-term goals, you should define two or three individual tasks or important outcomes that you want to achieve in your available time. Some of these goals should include activities that are not urgent but still important. These activities, such as maintaining relationships, developing personal principles and long-term planning, are critical to effective personal management. Ideally, these short-term goals should be related to the long-term goals you have identified in your mission statement.

Integrating goals into your personal mission statement

Once you have identified your most important tasks and goals, you can assign a specific day of the week to each goal, either as a priority or as a fixed deadline. You should also regularly review your annual or monthly schedule to ensure that your appointments are in line with your urgent tasks. This will not only help you to manage your work day more effectively, but also your personal life.

Important rules for efficient time management

Self-management differs from traditional time management because it is not only about organising professional tasks, but also about taking into account personal priorities during free time. It is good to distinguish between important and urgent tasks. Urgent tasks need to be completed at a specific time or require immediate attention, while important tasks are significant in terms of content. Effective time planning involves making a schedule for current tasks and bundling similar activities such as writing mails or making phone calls.

In self- and time-management, pending tasks are divided into four categories that help prioritise and organise tasks:

A- tasks (important and urgent)

B- tasks (important, but less urgent)

C- tasks (less important, but urgent)

D- tasks (neither important nor urgent)

It is important to understand that what is important is not necessarily urgent and what is urgent is not necessarily important. The importance you attach to tasks depends on your personal values. Time management helps you to use your time more effectively by structuring your work and focusing on what is important. It is about coordinating your tasks and interests efficiently, as time itself cannot be controlled. Time- and self-management are therefore crucial skills to organise your everyday life.
